General
Description
The ALC880 and ALC880D 7.1 Channel High Definition Audio codecs with UAA
(Universal Audio Architecture), featuring four 24-bit two-channel DACs
and three stereo 20-bit ADCs, are designed for high performance multimedia
PC systems. The ALC880(D) incorporates proprietary converter technology
to achieve 100dB sound quality; easily meeting PC2001 requirements and
also bringing PC sound quality closer to consumer electronic devices.
The
ALC880(D) provides 7.1 output channels, along with flexible mixing,
mute, and fine gain control functions to provide a complete integrated
audio solution for PCs. The DACs (with a highest sampling frequency of
192kHz) and Realtek proprietary hardware content protection are applicable
for DVD-Audio, previously only implemented in high-end consumer electronics,
but now achieved by PCs with the ALC880(D) inside. The ALC880(D) is also
the only High Definition Audio codec to integrate three stereo ADCs that
can support a microphone array with Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC), Beam
Forming (BF), and Noise Suppression (NS) technology simultaneously, significantly
improving recording quality for conference calls. With this unique feature
(3 stereo ADCs), the ALC880(D) can provide high-quality audio using S/PDIF
to output analog data, or for multiple-source recording applications.
Realtek's proprietary impedance sensing and jack detect techniques allow
device loads on inputs and outputs to be auto-detected. All analog IO
are input and output capable, and headphone amplifiers are also integrated
at each analog output. All analog IOs can be re-tasked according to user’s
definitions, or automatically switched depending on the connected device
type (Universal Audio Jack®).
The ALC880(D) supports 32-bit S/PDIF input and output functions and a
sampling rate of up to 96kHz, offering easy connection of PCs to high quality
consumer electronic products such as AC-3 decoders/speakers, and mini disk
devices.
The ALC880(D) supports host/soft audio from the Intel ICH6 chipset,
and also from any other HDA compatible audio controller. With EAX/Direct
Sound
3D/I3DL2/A3D compatibility, and excellent software utilities like Karaoke
mode, environment emulation, software equalizer, HRTF 3D positional audio,
and optional Dolby® Digital Live, the ALC880(D) provides an excellent
entertainment package and game experience for PC users.

Intel
NetBurst® Microarchitecture
Intel NetBurst microarchitecture delivers a number of innovative features
including Hyper-Threading Technology, hyper-pipelined technology, 1066,
800, 533 or 400 MHz system bus, and Execution Trace Cache, as well as
a number of enhanced features such as Advanced Transfer Cache, Advanced
Dynamic Execution, enhanced floating-point and multimedia unit, and Streaming
SIMD Extensions 2 (SSE2). Further enhancements in the 90 nm process-based
Pentium 4 processor include Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3). Many
of these innovations and advances were made possible with improvements
in processor technology, process technology, and circuit design and could
not previously be implemented in high-volume, manufacturable solutions.
The features and resulting benefits of the microarchitecture are defined
below.
H
yper-Threading
Technology
HT Technology is ground-breaking technology that changes the landscape
of processor design by going beyond GHz to improve processor performance.
It allows software programs to "see" two processors and work
more efficiently. This new technology enables the processor to execute
two series, or threads, of instructions at the same time, thereby improving
performance and system responsiveness. The Pentium 4 processor supporting
HT Technology is designed specially to deliver immediate increases in
performance and system responsiveness with existing applications in multitasking
environments (that is, where two or more functions are running at the
same time) and with many stand-alone applications today. Furthermore,
the Pentium 4 processor supporting HT Technology provides performance
headroom for the future.
Hyper-Pipelined Technology
The hyper-pipelined technology of the Intel NetBurst microarchitecture
increases the pipeline depth delivering increased performance, frequency,
and scalability of the processor. One of the key pipelines, the branch
prediction/recovery pipeline, is implemented in 31 stages on the 90 nm
Pentium 4 processor, compared to 20 stages on the 0.13 micron Pentium
4 processor.
1066MHz, 800 MHz, 533 MHz or 400 MHz System Bus
In the Pentium 4 processor with 1066 MHz system bus, the bus supports high
performance by delivering up to 8.5 GB of data-per-second into and out
of the processor. This is accomplished through a physical signaling scheme
of quad-pumping the data transfers over a 266 MHz clocked system bus
and a buffering scheme allowing for sustained 1066 MHz data transfers.
The same quad-pumping of data is true for Pentium 4 processors with 800
MHz system bus (6.4 GB data-per-second with a 200 MHz clocked system
bus), 533 MHz system bus (4.2 GB data-per-second with a 133 MHz clocked
system bus) and 400 MHz system bus (3.2 GB data-per-second with a 100
MHz clocked system bus). This compares to 1.06 GB/s delivered on the
Pentium® III processor's 133 MHz system bus.
Level 1 Execution Trace Cache
The 90 nm Pentium 4 processor features 16-KB data cache compared to 8-KB
on the 0.13 micron Pentium 4 processor. In addition to the data cache,
the Pentium 4 processor includes an Execution Trace Cache that stores
up to 12-K decoded micro-ops in the order of program execution. This
increases performance by removing the decoder from the main execution
loop and makes more efficient usage of the cache storage space since
instructions that are branched around are not stored. The result is a
means to deliver a high volume of instructions to the processor's execution
units and a reduction in the overall time required to recover from branches
that have been mis-predicted.
Enhanced Intel
SpeedStep® Technology
Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology can enable power savings and acoustics
improvement benefit. When running applications that demand less processor
power, the operating system will adjust the processor clock down. Enabling
of Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology can lead to power efficient systems
that can run quieter and cooler.
Intel® Enhanced Memory 64 Technology (Intel® EM64T)***
Intel EM64T provides an enhancement to Intel's 32-bit architecture by enabling
the desktop processor platform to access larger amounts of memory. With
appropriate 64-bit supporting hardware and software, platforms based
on an Intel processor supporting Intel EM64T can enable use of extended
virtual and physical memory. Intel EM64T provides flexibility for 32
bit now and future software that supports 64-bit computing.
1024-KB or 512-KB Level 2 Advanced Transfer Cache
The 90 nm process-based Pentium 4 processor features 1MB (5xx) or 2-MB
(6xx) L2 Advanced Transfer Cache (ATC) compared to 512-KB on the 0.13 micron
process-based Pentium 4 processor. The Level 2 ATC delivers a much higher
data throughput channel between the Level 2 cache and the processor core.
The Advanced Transfer Cache consists of a 256-bit (32-byte) interface that
transfers data on each core clock. As a result, the Pentium 4 processor
with 1MB L2 cache at 3.80 GHz can deliver a data transfer rate of 122 GB/s.
This compares to a transfer rate of 16 GB/s on the Pentium III processor
at 1 GHz. Features of the ATC include :

Non-Blocking, full speed, on-die level 2 cache
- 8-way set associativity
- 256-bit data bus to the level 2 cache
- Data clocked into and out of the cache every clock cycle
Integrated 2MB Level 3 Cache on Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Extreme
Edition 3.46 GHz
The 2-MB L3 cache is available only with the Pentium 4 processor Extreme
Edition. The additional third level of cache is located on the processor
die and is designed specifically to meet the compute needs of high-end
gamers and other power users. The Integrated L3 cache is available in 2
MB and when coupled with either the 1066 MHz or 800 MHz system bus provides
a high bandwidth path to memory. The efficient design of the integrated
L3 cache provides a faster path to large data sets stored in cache on the
processor. This results in reduced average memory latency and increased
throughput for larger workloads.
Integrated
2MB Level 2 Cache on Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Extreme
Edition 3.73 GHz and 6xx
The 2-MB Advanced Transfer Cache (on-die, full-speed Level 2 cache) with
8-way associative and Error Correcting Code (ECC) can improve overall performance
by allowing the processor to have faster access to a larger amount of the
most often used data.
Advanced Dynamic Execution
The Advance Dynamic Execution engine is a very deep, out-of-order speculative
execution engine that keeps the execution units executing instructions.
It also includes an enhanced branch prediction algorithm that has the
net effect of reducing the number of branch mis-predictions.
Enhanced Floating-Point and Multimedia Unit
The Pentium 4 processor expands the floating-point registers to a full
128-bit and adds an additional register for data movement which helps
improve performance on both floating-point and multimedia applications.
Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3) Instructions
With the introduction of SSE2, the Intel NetBurst microarchitecture extended
the SIMD capabilities that Intel MMX technology and SSE technology delivered
by adding 144 instructions. The next generation 90 nm process-based Pentium
4 processor introduces the Streaming SIMD Extensions 3 (SSE3), which
includes 13 additional SIMD instructions over SSE2. The 13 new instructions
in SSE3 are primarily designed to improve thread synchronization and
specific application areas such as media and gaming.
Features Used for Testing and Performance/Thermal Monitoring
- Built-in Self Test (BIST) provides single stuck-at fault coverage of
the microcode and large logic arrays, as well as testing of the instruction
cache, data cache, Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLBs), and ROMs.
- IEEE 1149.1 Standard Test Access Port and Boundary Scan mechanism enables
testing of the Pentium 4 processor and system connections through a standard
interface.
- Internal performance counters for performance monitoring and event counting.
- Includes a Thermal Monitor feature that allows motherboards to be more
cost effective.
