The truth about defective pixels In theory, it is always possible that a laptop ships with one or two dead pixels. It is extremely rare though. Of course, it can happen that a pixel is defective and that you don't even notice it, because it is so small that it blends with the others. That is why manufacturers in general refuse to exchange their screens if there is less than a certain number of defective pixels. The ISO (International System Organization) has listed this policy as perfectly acceptable. Logicaly, all manufacturers take advantage of its benefits (thus reducing their cost of production greatly since LCDs are still very complex to manufacture). Again, defective pixels happen extremely rarely ; less and less as the technology improves. About our LCD screens Overam does not manufacture screens. We get them through one of the rare "real" screen manufacturers. We use high end Hitachi active matrix TFT flat LCD screen panels. We chose Hitachi because they are one of the very finest screen manufacturers on the worldwide market. This is a very good sign of overall quality of our products. The screen is one of the most important features of a notebook, and the first thing that most people consider when selecting a laptop. Our specialty : laptop integration Rather than manufacturing these screens (which is a specialty in itself), our mission is to integrate them inside our notebooks. We specialize in laptop computer integration. When we integrate our laptops, we test them but cannot opticaly verify that all pixels are valid. Especialy when we commercialize several hundreds of laptops per day. This is why we cannot guarantee that there won't be any dead pixels upon shipping, unless you select the dead-pixel insurance, which involves an explicit manual (read "human", "optical" or "non-automated") verification. Our replacement policy No other laptop integrators or manufacturers, at this date, will replace the screens if they have less than a certain amount of defective pixels (usualy 5 or more). Consequently, what we are offering is unique : we are the only ones to offer to change the screen if your laptop comes with even just one dead pixel. Not only will we change the screen for free, but we will also spend the labor time to do it for free. The only thing that we ask is that you take care of the shipping cost (a flat rate of $60 for the continental USA only). The insurance policy that we list on our Web site as an option or extra service is also a preventive measure to inform our potential customers of the real risks, rather than having them find out by surprise after their purchase. Most of our competitors, if not all of them, feel it is not that important and that it would elevate their cost of production beyond what they are ready to concede to keep their price down. What could happen Imagine how frustrating it must be to open a package containing a pricy notebook and discovering that there is a bad pixel in the middle of your wide screen ? Wouldn't you feel you wasted your investment ? Would you not feel upset at the company that will not take it back ? Or imagine how difficult it must be for someone to decide between a laptop and a desktop because he is worried about getting a dead pixel ? Other laptop manufacturers will systematicaly refuse to change the screen unless there is more than a certain number of defective pixels. And again, they have the legal right to do so, because they are backed by the ISO standards. Our superior service Thanks to Overam, you really don't have anything to worry about at all ! This is why our service is much superior : not only do we warn people in advance, but we also even offer to replace the screens at basicaly no charge ! The fact that we are the only ones that will actualy accept to exchange the laptop if there is just one dead-pixel is an outstanding service in itself. Thanks to Overam, you thus get the certitude that you can indeed get a brand new laptop with NO dead pixels, which no other laptop brand does at this date. |
