Custom OS Configuration - Multi Boot

An operating system (OS) is software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs. The operating system is an essential component of the system software in a computer system. If you need multiple Operating Systems to run on your laptop, we can help. Multi-booting allows more than one operating system to reside on one computer, for example if you have a primary operating system and an alternate system that you use less frequently. Another reason for multi-booting can be to investigate or test a new operating system without switching completely. Multi-booting allowed a new operating system to configure all applications needed, and migrate data before removing the old operating system, if desired. A possible alternative to multi-booting is virtualization, where a hypervisor is used to host one or more virtual machines running guest operating systems. Multi-booting is also useful in situations where different software applications require different operating systems. Each virtual machine can execute its own operating system, including versions of Microsoft Windows, Linux, BSD, and MS-DOS. VMware Workstation can save the state of a virtual machine (a 'snapshot') at any instant. These snapshots can later be restored, effectively returning the virtual machine to the saved state. VMware Workstation includes the ability to designate multiple virtual machines as a team which can then be powered on/off, suspended/resumed as a single object, making it particularly useful for testing client-server environments.

TECH Edge Editor's Choice. A laptop that can hold its own with most desktops running hefty applications, including CAD and graphics. The huge display is impressive, but it's not the only high-end feature. The Mirage 4700 turned in a score of 6,711 on Futuremark's 3DMark2001SE video benchmark. That's a good score for a laptop, and well within the desktop range. With the Mirage 4700's fast CPU and Hyper-Threading capability, it will excel at applications that can take advantage of these features, such as video transcoding and 2D and 3D rendering. With Hyper-Threading now becoming more common on desktop PCs, more applications will incorporate this capability to improve performance. If the 17-inch display isn't large enough, you can use the S-Video or composite-video outputs to attach the Mirage 4700 to a larger screen TV. There's an optical /PDIF output that lets you route the audio to a quality sound system. The Mirage 4700 is fast, has a nice display, and lots of goodies. Thoses goodies extend into connectivity. In addition to a standard RJ-45 connector for wired 100BaseTX Ethernet, the Mirage 4700 has wireless Ethernet and Bluetooth capability. The Ethernet transceiver works on the 802.11b standard, and we were able to connect to our office 802.11a+g network in minutes. A Big Goody Bag : Unpacking the Mirage 4700 is a bit like going through a goody bag. OVERAM includes a lot of nice extras that improve the overall computing experience. There's a CMOS video camera built into the top of the lid for video instant messages. Since it is embedded, you'll never have to worry about losing it.

These observations come after my third purchase and six years of experience. 'With OVERAM, everything is possible!'. This has certainly proven to be the case with me. As far as service, you definitely have been extremely accommodating and helpful. This will be my third custom laptop. My knowledge of the product line as well as of the industry and technology, make me a very informed consumer in this area. Compared to the other suppliers out there, your pricing is at least as good if not better. However, price is not everything, service, support, and 'relationship' are equally important factors to me when choosing a supplier. In this regard, your efforts on my behalf 'sold' me on the purchase. Since I am very computer literate, from both a software and hardware perspective, service is very much a secondary issue for me. Typically, if I have a problem I will troubleshoot it to the point where I either fix it myself or, when I call in, I am simply describing what needs to be fixed and setting up a pickup for the unit. So, in the case of a purchase such as this, price and a relationship or confidence in the supplier are more important. With online purchases, relationships tend not to become a factor, so price and confidence are left, and typically the confidence part is just a guess. However, from your handling of this, you have developed a relationship and confidences that sealed the deal. What made a difference were all your efforts, such as your ability to track down answers to very specific questions, your knowledge of the product, and your anticipation of my needs. Additionally, your honesty and willingness to work with me made me feel good enough to choose you to buy from, as opposed to the other suppliers. Add to this my own hesitancy surrounding such a purchase and you may start to realize what a big part your interaction has played in this sale. Considering how you have 'come through' again and again, I can't give anything less than 'rave reviews' for your support. It is your support that distinguishes you from your competitors. The handling of my specific case, is definitely worth writing about. We've had a lot of interaction over the past year and you've always worked your best to help me out and make things right. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your efforts and can't thank you enough for the many times you have come through for me. You know that I will be contacting you when I consider upgrading. However, for now, the system you helped me put together is still 'cutting edge' when compared to anything out there!! I still get satisfaction from my friends reactions when they see how fast it is in a multiprocessing environment, and when I tell them that my system disk is Striped using Hardware RAID 0, on a laptop!! They all still work for HP in the Enterprise Systems division, where storage like this is commonplace - but not on a laptop! So, the fact that I chose your company boils down to two factors that played equally important roles, very good pricing of the product, compared to your competitors and your skills. Great site, you guys seem to be the only ones that really offer an excellent selection of individual parts and a superb amount of customization for your machines! A lot of the bigger mainstream companies have lost that customizable aspect of their computer line-up, and it's a shame. There are some things I want upgraded to the max, and some things I want built to a lesser scale, and I want to be able to choose which elements of my machine to max out! Keep up the good work! This is all very satisfactory, thank you. And I must say, I'm thrilled with the laptop, it is an amazing piece of equipment, I have used it extensively (and, at times, rather brutally) to handle a monstrous workload that no machine I have ever owned could ever have accomplished. What I am referring to is the video manipulation and audio mixing involved with the film editing field, along with the processing and rendering of complex graphical effects and the detailed authoring of intricate DVD menus with which to present these projects. It takes a serious workhorse of a computer to be efficient at these tasks, and this laptop is tremendously good at what it does. It's been a joy and a blessing to own this laptop (all three weeks that I've had it!), and in 2 or 3 years, when my desktop has worn itself thin, I will be coming to Overam for a B-Can. I've told my friends I wouldn't shop anywhere else, and they can see the conviction in my eyes! When in need of some good quality computing at some really affordable prices, I'm sure they'll be looking you up. Again, thanks for everything. It has been my privilege to do business with Overam. Shocks

Because they are designed to maximize mobility, laptops are prone to shocks. Remember that shocks are the first cause of internal damage for mobile devices; so take extra precaution when travelling, and try to keep the computer turned off during transit. One major enhancement is through the use of internal solid state drives, which have no moving parts, and thereby intrinsically increase overall reliability in quite significant proportions.

Hot spots

Our laptops are compatible with the Wi-Fi wireless network standard. Make sure you take advantage of the outstanding benefits this provides. More and more public places worldwide are equipped with broadband wireless Internet (airports, libraries, cyber-cafes, etc...). Keep in mind that Wi-Fi usage will drain your battery faster than normal.

Cooling

Thermal dissipation is directly to your notebook's longevity. Never use your laptop directly on a surface that prevents proper air flow, such as inside the laptop case, on carpet, on a blanket or a pillow. Periodicaly check that vents are not obstructed (including by dust). Use a cooling pad if necessary.

Autonomy

Discharge completely your battery at least once per month. This will ensure that the chemicals inside your battery perform optimaly, in turn causing an extended battery life (autonomy).

Infections

It is not enough to have an antivirus program installed. It needs to be kept up-to-date, and we recommend to update it at least once per week. You should also use a spyware remover, a firewall and set up a spam filter (without mentioning critical Windows Updates and any available Service Packs.

Dust

Laptops are very sensitive to dust. Make sure the laptop is never left on the floor or in an area accumulating dust, and that it is always high on a table, desk, stand, etc... Check vents frequently to see if they are not obtructed. If too much dust packs up the vents, thermal dissipation will not be as effective, causing the laptop to heat up and eventually crash or even die.

Theft

Use the CyberAngel security solution to track your laptop in case it is stolen. All laptops also come with a built-in Kensignton lock. Use strong passwords. On laptops equipped with FingerPrint readers, set up the biometrics to lock access. And don't forget to let the laptop's TPM module encrypt your data on the fly, thereby preventing anyone from retrieving your personal files, even in the case your notebook gets stolen.

Transit

Always use an adequate carrying bag when travelling, to enhance shock absorption. Whenever you need to ship your laptop through a carrier (FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc...), always use packaging specifically designed for laptop transportation. Not doing so could void the warranty.

Humidity

Laptops are very sensitive to humidity. Avoid liquid exposure as much as you can. If liquid gets accidentally spilled on your laptop, immediately turn it off, detach the power cord and remove the battery. Let it dry completely and contact us for additional assistance.

Updates

Make sure that your computer downloads Window Updates periodicaly and frequently. This will enhance the stability, privacy and security of your operating system.

USB ports

The USB standard dictates that ports provide up to 500 mA of current to power external devices. This means that you can use your laptop's USB ports to charge external accessories. Some external devices may require more power, and can be connected to multiple USB powers (or to a 5 V power transformer). Some of our notebooks are also equipped with a special USB port, specifically designed to provide more amperage (thereby accelerating the charge), and are functional even when the laptop is powered off. Most notebooks come with both Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (35 MB/s) and Super-Speed USB 3.0 ports (500 MB/s).
